anime recommendation

Utena. it's badass. very weird, in a Japanese sort of way, and rather homoerotic at times, but there's more anime schoolgirls than there are swordfights, and there's alot of those. there's really strange symbolism in surprisingly material forms. in fact, the majority of objects in the environment are there to counterpoint the dialogue and storyline. cars plummet hundreds of feet to their doom when someone loses a duel. it's great. plus there's weird little shadow theater things that are both short and funny, and the characters are all pretty fucked up, the way real people are.
the movie is great, short and confusing. the series is absolutely awesome, long and perplexing. i recommend them both. watch the series if you have time. it's 39 episodes, but you actually figure out who all the people are, the plot is deeper and less nonsensical and Himemeya is a much more interesting character. on the other hand, the movie is utterly bizarre, Himemeya's a little cuter and there are great lines like 'Don't think you're the only one who can turn into a car!' plus the shadow theater has a more retro-50's feel, which i dig.
Revolutionary Girl Utena -- chicks, swords, cars and a giant mindfuck.
